Commencement of the 4th Annual Yarney Retreat at Busa Wangdue Goenpa Dorling Dhensa 多傑林巴
On the auspicious occasion of the full moon day, the sacred annual Yarney retreat was formally initiated at Busa Wangdue Gonpa.
This important spiritual observance, known as Yarney—which translates to “summer retreat”—is a time-honored tradition practiced in monastic institutions and shedras across the Buddhist world. The retreat traces its origins back to the time of Lord Buddha, who, out of profound compassion, instituted this practice during the monsoon season to prevent the unintentional killing of insects and other small beings that abound during this rainy season.
During this sacred retreat, monks and practitioners observe stricter monastic discipline, engage in intensive study, contemplation, and meditation, and cultivate virtues such as mindfulness, compassion, and patience. The essence of Yarney lies not only in the preservation of life but also in deepening one’s commitment to the Dharma and living in harmony with all sentient beings.
May this sacred observance serve to protect the lives of countless innocent insects and small creatures, and may it also inspire each of us to walk the path of non-harming and mindful living.
